The Pentagon plans to replenish the powerhouse brigade with Bradley fighting vehicles, Forbes said. The US must resist Russian disinformation tactics and help Ukraine, leading war watchers argue. Experts suggest persistent support for Ukraine and stopping Russia from shaping perception. ISW emphasized that Russia is benefitting from Western countries that continuously withhold crucial weapons from Ukraine that can significantly incapacitate it. Lithuania has been helping Ukraine to repair its Leopard 2 tanks after they were damaged in the war against Russia. "Russia cannot defeat Ukraine or the West — and will likely lose — if the West mobilizes its resources to resist the Kremlin," the analysts wrote.

Near Avdiivka, Ukraine CNN —Straddling the frontlines, the small town of Avdiivka has become the epicenter of the war in Ukraine. Still in Ukrainian hands – just – it’s enclosed on three sides by Russian troops and cannons. Amid the ruins, Russian and Ukrainian troops clash, preyed upon by drones and the occasional tank. Reliant on the Soviet kit they have, not the Western arms they crave, Ukrainian troops have learned to be more creative with their weapons in battle. Read previewThe Russian military would've overrun Ukrainian positions on a key part of the front line if Ukraine didn't have US-supplied Bradley armored vehicles, CNN reported. The report said that the Bradley armored vehicles had been vital in holding off Russian attacks near the town of Avdiikva, eastern Ukraine, which has been the target of fierce Russian attacks. The US supplied Ukraine with 160 Bradley armored vehicles as part of an aid package in early 2023, and they were used extensively as part of Ukraine's counteroffensive over the summer. Ukraine initially used the vehicles as part of ambitious assaults on Russian positions, but Russian artillery was able to target them. Ukraine has not used US-made Abrams tanks since they arrived in September, analysts said. AdvertisementThe US sent 31 advanced M1A2 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in September — but they've been notably absent from an actual fighting there. AdvertisementSince receiving its first batch of Abrams in September, Ukraine has likely mixed them with the US-made M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, Cancian told BI. Sergej Sumlenny, founder of the European Resilience Initiative Center in Germany, said the US missed its moment to send its Abrams tanks. Now, with Russia's defensive lines stretching over 1,000 kilometers, or 745 miles , he said the 31 US-provided Abrams tanks are too few to play a "decisive" role in the war.

Tanks have big guns, but medium-caliber cannons on other armored vehicles can be just as deadly. AdvertisementAdvertisementWhile tanks and their big guns have been getting the lion's share of attention in Ukraine, another weapon is proving equally deadly. Medium-caliber cannon — the 20-mm to 40-mm cannon found on infantry fighting vehicles, air-defense vehicles, and other platforms around the world — have been wreaking damage against infantry and other targets. Personnel load the gun of a BMP-2 amphibious infantry fighting vehicle during an arms exhibition Russia in September 2013. The effectiveness of medium-caliber cannons suggest that as armored vehicles evolve, those guns will remain part of their armament.

Ukrainian soldiers have relied on US-made Bradley fighting vehicles to stay alive in combat. In a recent interview, one soldier said the Bradleys are "priceless" during nighttime assaults. Ukrainian soldiers and mechanics work on a Bradley at a secret workshop in the Zaporizhzhia region on July 13. But despite the heavy praise by Ukrainian soldiers, Bradleys are not indestructible and they have still fallen victim to Russia's formidable defenses and relentless artillery in the months since. Open-source intelligence collected by the site Oryx shows that 53 of the Washington-provided vehicles have been destroyed, damaged, or abandoned during fighting.

US-provided Bradleys keep Ukrainian troops alive, but still get knocked out by Russian defenses. Kyiv's troops have seen the benefits of the Bradley fighting vehicles, including agile maneuverability, fire power, and strong armor. Bradley infantry fighting vehicles are operated by a three-person crew — a driver, commander, and gunner. Supply lines for parts or replacement vehicles can also impact how many Bradleys Ukraine is able to use at a given time. The US has provided Ukraine with at least 100 Bradley armored personnel carriers. In January, the Biden administration announced it was sending Ukraine no fewer than 50 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, an armored personnel carrier that pairs heavy firepower with the ability to transport about 10 soldiers. The New York Times reported Saturday that Ukraine's 47th Mechanized Brigade is the only unit known to have received the vehicles. That means nearly a third of the Bradley vehicles may have already been lost or damaged. "If we were using some Soviet armored personnel carrier we would all probably be dead after the first hit."

CNN —The beginning of the much-anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive against Russia seems not to have been a resounding success for Kyiv. But they don’t mean that all is lost for Ukraine – or even that Ukraine is now losing. Russia’s artillery ammunition, missile stockpiles and most-modern ground combat vehicles were gravely depleted, so 60-year-old tanks have been withdrawn from storage. It was while attempting to breach a path through one such fortified minefield that the 47th Brigade’s vehicles bogged down last week. Notably, a parallel drive toward Mariupol at the same time as the 47th’s failed attack last week has made fast gains, compelling Russian forces to withdraw from several settlements.
